Name and Parentage

Llywelyn ap Madog [1]

Llywelyn ap Madog ap Einion ap Rhirid, called brawd hynaf (older brother). [2]

1270 Birth and Birth Year Estimation

Boyer suggests that Llywelyn ap Madog was born, say, 1295. [2]

This, however, presents a date problem. Boyer estimates Madog's birth at 1270 [3] and Madog's son Llywelyn's birth at 1295. [2] He then shows Llywelyn's daughter Gwladus married to Ednyfed Gam ab Iorwerth Foel of Pengwern, and Ednyfed Gam also born, say, 1270.[4] This would make Glwladus herself born, say, 1275, 20 years before her father llywelyn's birth.

To rationalize these estimates, the following estimated dates are presented on WikiTree: [5]

  • Einion, father of Madog, born 1230, no change
  • Madog's birth 1250 rather than 1270. This is the birth year estimate used by the LDS Pedigree Resource File. [1]
  • Madog's son Llywelyn, born 1270 rather than 1295.
  • Llywelyn's daughter Gwladus, born 1295
  • Llywelyn's son in law Ednyfed Gam, born 1280, rather than 1270

The revised birth year estimate for Llywelyn is more consistent with the LDS Pedigree Resource File which estimates llywelyn's birth as 1265.[1]

Llywelyn was of Tegeingl, Flint, Wales. Llywelyn was the son of Madog ap Einion, born about 1250. Madog was of Tegeingl, Flint, Wales. His mother was from Caernarvonshire, Wales. [6]

1292 Marriage

Llywelyn married Gwenhwyfar Greg ferch Gruffudd ab Iorwerth ap Maredudd ap Matusalem of Prysaeddfed ap Hwfa. [2]

Assuming an estimated birth year of 1270, and the birth of Susanna in 1293, 1292 seems a reasonable estimate for llywelyn's marriage. This is substantially different from two estimates in the LDS Pedigree Resource Files: Llywelyn married Gwenhwyfar "Greg" verch Gruffudd about 1265. She was of Lliffon, Anglesey, Wales. Alternatively, they married about 1280 in Tegeingl, Flint, Wales [1]

Issue

Llywelyn and Gwenhwyfar were the parents of three children. [2] Estimating their year of marriage as 1292, their children would be born 1293, 1295, and 1297.

  3. Maredudd. Boyer shows he had descendants and lands in Gyffylliog, Maesmaencymro and Bryncaredig.[2] LDS shown him born about 1287, of Tegeingl, Flint, Wales. [1] Revised estimate has him born 1295.
